New chief for Ericsson Malaysia

Telecommunications equipment provider Ericsson has appointed Jan Signell as head of its Malaysian and South East Asian operations effective June 1.

He will take on the role of Ericsson South East Asia president and Ericsson Malaysia country manager, succeeding Kristian Tear, who will assume a new position within Ericsson.

Presently based in Stockholm, Signell brings with him 20 years of experience from various positions within Ericsson.

“It is certainly a good time to be back here again, especially when there are so many exciting developments in the region," Signell said.

He said that one of his focus areas would be to help operators profitably tap into the low-ARPU (Average Revenue Per User) segments, in recognition of the fact that South East Asia comprises several high-growth countries characterised by large populations with a growing youth segment and a high proportion of low-income users,

The Sony Ericsson HBH-200 Bluetooth handsfree headset is a discreet yet highly sophisticated device.

It's neat and lightweight yet offers advanced functionality such as caller ID (displaying the name or number of the caller) and handsfree call handling.

The HBH-200 consists of a small control unit which can be clipped onto the users' clothes, worn on a lanyard around the neck or simply kept in a shirt pocket. The small earpiece connects to the unit with a thin wire which also houses the microphone.

Physically, there is not much to differentiate the P910i from the P900, except that the keypad has been replaced with larger buttons that give a more positive response. The P910i is slightly thicker and weighs in at 5g heavier, but at 155g it is no heavier than the current generation of 3G mobile phones.

The P910i uses the same Symbian operating system as its predecessor and shares many of the features of the P900. However there are quite a few new features that make this phone more than just a minor upgrade. First thing to mention is the new QWERTY keyboard. The numerical keypad flips down to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard on the reverse side. The user now has a choice of text entry methods: QWERTY keyboard, predictive text using the normal keypad and handwriting recognition using the screen and stylus. The user interface can be driven by touching menu icons on the screen or with the jog dial on the side of the phone.

On flipping down the keypad, the full size of the LCD screen becomes apparent. The screen has been upgraded from 65,000 colours on the P900 to 262,000 colours. When you consider the enormous resolution of this screen (208 x 320 pixels), you have virtually the best display on any mobile currently available. Only the Sharp GX30 can match this screen, and that phone has a fraction of the features available on the P910i.

Another new feature is push email. Emails get sent automatically to your phone - there's no need to download from a mailserver. You can synchronise email with your PC via the Bluetooth connection.

The final change of note is the increase in the internal memory from 16 Mbytes to 64 Mbytes, which is very welcome, given the functionality of this phone.

The K700i is very multimedia orientated with a 16-bit TFT display (176x220 pixels), 40 voice polyphonics, the ability to play 3D games, and a massive 32MB RAM to store all your data. Surprisingly, Sony Ericsson has included an FM radio into the K700, making it the first Sony Ericsson phone to have such a feature.

Up to 20 favourite radio stations can be stored in the K700i with the preset function. An MP3 player is included on the phone, but since it doesn't have a Memory Stick Duo slot, "only" 32MB is available for music (approx 30 mins). The radio, or even MP3 files, can be listened to through a portable handsfree, Bluetooth headset, or through the phone's speaker.

Thanks to the 64MB Memory Stick Duo included in the box, the D750i can store an impressive amount of images or music, memory can be further expanded as the phone is compatible with up to 2GB Memory Stick PRO Duo. Estimated talk time is around 9 hours which is the same as the Sony Ericsson W800.

It seems that the D750i's real Unique Selling Proposition is the integration into T-Mobile's "Mobile Jukebox" service, enabling users to download various tracks directly from T-Mobile. In this respect then, the D750i designation simply means that this facility is already programmed into the handset, rather than the user having to do it themselves.

The D750i is due to roll out during Q2 2005.

I find the SE S710 a bit bulky.

The S710a is capable of delivering up to seven hours of talk time from a single battery charge or up to 300 hours of operation in the standby mode. The handset also incorporates a contact phone book capable of storing up to 510 entries, a speaker phone for hands-free operation and a conference-calling feature.

The Sony-Ericsson S710 is a GSM/GPRS messaging phone that incorporates a built-in camera that is capable of capturing MPEG-4 video clips as well as still images.

The handset's clamshell case also encompasses a Class 10 EDGE radio with the ability to upload images, e-mail attachments and other data at a peak speed of 240 Kbps and a download speed of 120 Kbps.

Measuring 4.2 x 1.9 x 1 inches and weighing in at 137 grams, the S710 features a backlit, 2.3-inch Thin Film Transistor (TFT) screen that offers 262,000 colors and a 240 x 320 resolution. The S710 also features an innovative swivel design, which is essentially a "dual-front" form factor that outwardly reflects the internal capabilities of the handset.
My main complaint about the Sony-Ericsson S710 is that the handset ships with a mere 32 MB of memory rather than the 128-MB Sony Memory Stick that the device is capable of supporting. This offering is a bit skimpy when compared to competing products, such as the Samsung Latest News about Samsung P777, which ships with 100 MB of storage capacity.

Sony Ericsson has joined Nokia in admitting that its Bluetooth phones could be vulnerable to a 'snarfing' attack, meaning that a hacker can access data even if the phone is not paired with another Bluetooth device

Sony Ericsson has admitted that two of its phones and three Ericsson handsets are vulnerable to a snarfing attack.

The revelation comes just days after Nokia also admitted that some of its handsets have the same problem, which can allow an attacker to copy and copy a phone's contacts book, calendar and other data without requiring the victim to 'pair' with another Bluetooth device.

A Sony Ericsson spokesman said: "It has come to our attention that it is possible for a remote Bluetooth computer to extract personal information from a phone with Bluetooth even if it is un-paired."

The spokesman told ZDNet UK that the problem affects the T610 and T68i handsets as well as the Ericsson T39, R520 and T68 models.

The problem has apparently been fixed in handsets that are sold today, but the spokesman advised customers to ensure they have the latest software in their phones: "Consumers can check which version of the software they have by typing >*<<*<* from the standby screen (the chevrons indicate left and right movements of the mouse button on the phone) and then selecting ServiceInfo/SW then Information from the menus.

If customers find they have the software version "R1A081", the spokesman said they should contact an authorised Sony Ericsson service centre to get their phone upgraded.

Additionally, Sony Ericsson suggests users "set Bluetooth to hide, or simply turn off Bluetooth when it is not being used," as a "preventative action."
